The
Earthly Angels Autism Fund of the Luzerne Foundation is dedicated to helping
local children afflicted with autism. Our mission is to proactively increase
autism awareness; provide funding to qualified nonprofit organizations for
autistic services, support programs and education; and to bring hope to those
families who deal with the hardships of this disorder.
Our purpose is to find ways
to help the lives of local autistic children and their families. Having a
child diagnosed as autistic enables us to provide a unique perspective and
allows us to reach out to many local families in a knowing and caring way.
ADVISORY COMMITTEE:
An advisory
committee oversees all activities of the Fund and participates in the entire
decision making process. The purpose of the advisory committee is to gather
input from a variety of people. To have multiple individuals involved in making

Autism is a lifelong
developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of
life and while some children are born with autism, many children do not acquire
autism until the second or third year of life.
Autism results from a
neurological disorder that affects brain functioning which interferes with
communication, learning, behavior and social development; and although a cure
for autism has not been found, with proper treatment and intensive therapy
autistic children are able to reach their full greatest potential.
In 1990, the rate of autism
was 1 in 10,000. Today that number stands 1 in 150, according to Centers for
Disease Control.
Autism Spectrum Disorders
are more common than Downs Syndrome, Diabetes, Muscular Dystrophy, Cystic
Fibrosis and many forms of Childhood Cancer and autism is four times more
prevalent in boys than girls and has been found throughout the world in families
of all racial, ethnic and social backgrounds.
Over the past 30 years,
significant progress has been made in the areas of research, medicine,
diagnostic issues, and therapies for autism, resulting in improved quality of
life for those with autism and their loved ones and accurate, early diagnosis
and the resulting appropriate education and intervention are vital to the future
growth and development of the individual.
Since inception, 2001, the Earthly Angels Autism Fund of the Luzerne Foundation
has donated in excess of $80,000.00 to local non-profit organizations, which
provide autistic support and services to children and families. Hundred's of
children have benefited in both Luzerne &
Our need centers around the
growing number of children diagnosed each year with this complex disorder. In
addition to the number of children diagnosed, it is the treatment, therapy,
public awareness, and support of this growing population afflicted with autism.
These children require physical, occupational, and speech therapy, along with
behavioral intervention, educational provisions and financial support.
The Earthly Angels Autism
Fund of the Luzerne Foundation is extremely grateful for the continued support
from both individual, as well as business funding. Donations are accepted at any
time and greatly appreciated. If you wish to make a contribution, simply make a
